Raspberry Pi vs Pine A64

Introduction

Single Board Computers or SBCs have grown from making programming interesting, easy and inexpensive to young minds to being used in complex robotics, network and server projects. When speaking of single board computers, the first thing that pops in our minds (or most of us) is Raspberry Pi.

It became so popular that an estimated 20 million units have been sold until now. The success of Raspberry Pi has influenced several other creators and developers to make similar cheap yet powerful Single Board Computers.

One such family of single board computers is Pine64, a product developed to compete with Raspberry Pi, both in terms of price and performance.

The following is a small comparison between Raspberry Pi and Pine A64 single board computers.

Raspberry Pi vs Pine A64

The Raspberry Pi has been something of a minor cultural marvel in recent years, at least in the niche world of (very) portable computing. A computer the size of a small credit card that has as much computing power as the desktop machines we grew top with, these pocket-sized microcomputers have been used as everything from retro gaming rigs to full-blown desktop replacements.

They can even be manipulated to run affordable security camera setups, wireless printer servers, robot controllers and so much more.

The only barrier to entry for many might be the cost. Whilst you can pick up a Raspberry Pi 3B (the most recent model) for a pittance, for such a niche, hobbyist device, even the paltry £30/$35 price point might seem steep.

For those who are intrigued by the concept of the Pi, but are wary of the price, the Pine A64 minicomputer offers a remarkable alternative at more than half the price!

A microcomputer that is (on paper) just as powerful as its competitor, the Pine A64 single-board device boasts similar specs to the Pi and can more than keep up with it when it comes to most applications. But which comes out on top when the two are matched against each other in a good old-fashioned hardware face-off? Let’s examine the major benefits of each.

Raspberry Pi

  • The most popular single board computer on the planet with a major following, which means there are countless guides available online. For beginners, there really is no alternative.
  • The Pi’s default OS (“Raspbian”) was written with easy coding in mind and is a perfect learning tool for those looking to get into coding for the first time. Also, the Pi is so ubiquitous that a number of Linux style operating systems already work perfectly with it.
  • The setup is self-explanatory and even if you’re having trouble, there are many guides available.
  • The flexibility of the Pi is unprecedented in the market. A fully featured media center, replacement desktop rig, network server or retro arcade – the choices are almost endless.
  • Excellent wireless and wired connectivity with 4 USB ports, HDMI, Ethernet and more, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and the option to upgrade storage with a micro SD card.
  • ThePi Storeallows access to hundreds of apps engineered to work specifically with the Pi.

Raspberry Pi vs Pine A64 Raspberry Pi 3

Pine A64

  • For just $15 (base model) the Pine is an absolute steal with up to 2GB of RAM (compared to the Pi’s maximum of 1GB) and a CPU that matches the Pi’s 1.2 GHz quad-core processor.
  • The A64 has a built-in HDMI port capable of streaming 4K video.
  • A more powerful GPU than the Pi, meaning better graphics for gamers.
  • Can run Android OS, which will be instantly familiar to anyone who has ever used a smartphone.
  • Three models to choose from offering various levels of power and usability.

Raspberry Pi vs Pine A64 PineA64

Conclusion

Generally speaking – if you’re a beginner we’d recommend the Pi for its ease of use and large, vibrant community. But, if you’re willing to dig a little deeper, the Pine A64 will certainly give you more bang for your buck.

Whichever you opt for, however, make sure you supplement your purchase with a few accessories from RS Components to get the most out of your new device.

How Brushless Motor and ESC Work

In this tutorial we will learn how brushless motor and ESC work. This article is the first part of the following video, where we will learn the working principle of a brushless DC motor and ESC (Electronic Speed Controller), and in the second part we will learn how to control BLDC motor using Arduino.

How It Works

A BLDC motor consist of two main parts, a stator and a rotor.  For this illustration the rotor is a permanent magnet with two poles, while the stator consists of coils arranged as shown in the picture below.

Brushless motor main parts - a stator and a rotor

We all know that if we apply current through a coil it will generate a magnetic field and the magnetic field lines or the poles depends on the current direction.

Magnetic field generated by current running through a coil

So if we apply the appropriate current, the coil will generate a magnetic field that will attract the rotors permanent magnet. Now if we activate each coil one after another the rotor will keep rotating because of the force interaction between permanent and the electromagnet.

Force interaction between permanent and electromagnet in BLDC Motor

In order to increase the efficiency of the motor we can wind two opposite coils as a single coil in way that will generate opposite poles to the rotors poles, thus we will get double attraction force.

Brushless motor coils electromagnets force interaction

With this configuration we can generate the six poles on the stator with just three coils or phase. We can further increase the efficiency by energizing two coils at the same time. In that way one coil will attract and the other coil will repel the rotor.

BLDC motor working principle

In order the rotor to make a full 360 degrees cycle, it need six steps or intervals.

BLDC Motor current waveform

If we take a look at the current waveform we can notice that in each interval there is one phase with positive current, one phase with negative current and the third phase is turned off. This gives the idea that we can connect the free end points of each of the three phases together and so we can share the current between them or use a single current to energize the two phases at the same time.

Here’s an example. If we pull up phase A High, or connect it to the positive DC voltage, with some kind of switch, for example a MOSFET, and on the other side, connect the phase B to ground, then the current will flow from VCC, through phase A, the neutral point and phase B, to ground. So, with just a single current flow we generated the four different poles which cause the rotor to move.

Generating 4 magnetic poles with just a single current flow - Brushless motor working principle

With this configuration we actually have a star connection of the motor phases, where the neutral point is internally connected and the other three ends of the phases come out of the motor and that’s why brushless motor have three wires coming out of it.

Brushless motor star connection

So, in order the rotor to make full cycle we just need to activate the correct two MOSFETS in each of the 6 interval and that’s what ESCs are actually all about.

How does an ESC Work (Electronic Speed Controller)

An ESC or an Electronic Speed Controller controls the brushless motor movement or speed by activating the appropriate MOSFETs to create the rotating magnetic field so that the motor rotates. The higher the frequency or the quicker the ESC goes through the 6 intervals, the higher the speed of the motor will be.

How does an ESC Work - Electronic Speed Controller

However, here comes an important question, and that’s how do we know when to activate which phase. The answer is that we need to know the position of the rotor and there are two common methods used for determining the rotor position.

The first common method is by using Hall-effect sensors embedded in the stator, arranged equally 120 or 60 degrees from each other.

Brushless motor rotor position using Hall-effect sensors

As the rotors permanent magnets rotate the Hall-effect sensors sense the magnetic field and generate a logic “high” for one magnetic pole or logic “low” for the opposite pole. According to this information the ESC knows when to activate the next commutation sequence or interval.

The second common method used for determining the rotor position is through sensing the back electromotive force or back EMF. The back EMF occurs as a result of the exact opposite process of generating a magnetic field or when a moving or changing magnetic field pass through a coil it induces a current in the coil.

Back EMF in Brushless motor

So, when the moving magnetic field of the rotor pass through the free coil, or the one that’s not active, it will induce a current flow in coil and as result a voltage drop will occur in that coil. The ESC captures these voltage drops as they occur and based on them it predicts or calculates when the next interval should take place.

So that’s the basic working principle of brushless DC motors and ESCs and it’s the same even if we increase the number of poles of the both the rotor and the stator. We will still have a three-phase motor, only the number of intervals will increase in order to complete a full cycle.

Here we can also mention that BLDC motors can be inrunners or outrunners. An inrunner brushless motor has the permanent magnets inside the electromagnets, and vice versa, an outrunner motor has the permanent magnets outside the electromagnets. Again, they use the same working principle and each of them has its own strengths or weaknesses.

Inrunner vs outrunner brushless motor

Ok, that’s enough theory so now let’s demonstrate and see in real life what we explained above. For that purpose we will we connect the three phases of a brushless motor to an oscilloscope. I connected 3 resistors in a single point to make a virtual neutral point and on the other side I connected them to the three phases of the BLDC motor.

connecting a brushless motor to an oscilloscopeThe first thing that we can notice here are the three sine waves. These sine waves are actually the back EFM generated in the phases when they are not active.

BLDC motor Phases and Back EMF displayed on an Oscilloscope

We can see that as we change the RPM of the motor, the frequency of the sine waves changes and as well as their amplitude. The higher the RPM, the higher are the frequency and the amplitude of the back EMF sine waves. However, what drives the motor are actually these peaks, which are the active phases that generate the changing magnetic field.

BLDC motor phases activations displayed on a Rigol DS1054Z Oscilloscope

We can notice that at each interval, there are two active and one inactive phase. For example, here we have phase A and B active, while phase C is inactive. Then we have phase A and C active, while phase B is inactive, and so on.

Here I would like to give shout-out to Banggood.com for providing me this oscilloscope. It’s the Rigol DS1054Z and it’s one of the best entry-level oscilloscopes for its price point. It has four input channels, 50MHz bandwidth, which is hackable to 100MHz, it has a sampling rate of 1GSa/s and relatively large memory depth of 24Mpts.

Rigol DS1054Z SPI and I2C decoding

The display is 7 inches and it’s really nice and bright. It features various math functions, low pass and high pass filters, SPI and I2C decoding and much more. So again, big thanks to Banggood.com and make sure you check out this oscilloscope in their store.

Nevertheless, that’s the basic working principle of brushless motor. In case you want some more real live examples and learn how to control brusheless motors using Arduino you should check the part two of this tutorial.

Arduino Brushless Motor Control Tutorial | ESC | BLDC

In this tutorial we will learn how to control a brushless motor using Arduino and ESC. In case you want more details how BLDC motors work, you can check the other article or watch the following video which contains explanation of the working principle of a brushless DC motor and how to control one using Arduino and ESC.

Overview

For this example, I have an outrunner BLDC motor with the following specifications: it has a KV rating of 1000, it can be powered using 2S, 3S or 4S LiPo battery and it requires 30A ESC. The KV rating on a brushless motor defines the RPM of the motor per volt with no load.

BLDC Motor Specs - 1000KV 2S 3S 4S Lipo Battery 30A ESC

In this case, the 1000KV means that, for example, if we supply the motor with 2S LiPo battery which has a voltage of 7.4 volts, the motor can achieve maximum RPM of 7.4 times 1000, or that’s 7400 RPM.

Brushless motors are power hungry and the most common method for powering them is using LiPo batteries. The “S” number of a LiPo battery indicates how many cells the battery has, and each cell has a voltage of 3.7V.

3S Lipo Battery for Brushless Motor

For this example, I will use 3S LiPo battery which has 3 cells and that’s 11.1V. So, I can expect my motor to reach maximum RPM of 11100.

Lastly, here’s a 30A ESC that I will use for this example and match with the motor requirements. On one side the ESC has three wires that control the three phases of the motor and on the other side it has two wires, VCC and GND, for powering.

There is also another set of three wires coming out of the ESC and that’s the signal line, +5V and ground. This feature of the ESC is called Battery Eliminator Circuit and as the name suggests it eliminates the need of separate battery for a microcontroller. With this, the ESC provides regulated 5V which can be used to power our Arduino.

We can notice here that this connection is actually the same as the one we see on Servo motors.

brushless motor and servo - same type of connection

So, controlling a brushless motor using ESC and Arduino is as simple as controlling servo using Arduino. ESCs use the same type of control signal as servo and that’s the standard 50Hz PWM signal.

Brushless motor control signal 50hz PWM same as servo motor

This very convenient, because for example, when building an RC plane, we usually need both servos and brushless motors and, in this way, we can control them easily with the same type of controller.

So, using the Arduino we just have to generate the 50Hz PWM signal and depending on pulses width or the high state duration which should vary from 1 millisecond to 2 milliseconds, the ESC will drive the motor from minimum to maximum RPM.

Arduino Brushelss Motor Control using ESC

Arduino Brushless Motor Control – Circuit Diagram

Here’s the circuit diagram for this example. In addition to the ESC we will just use a simple potentiometer for controlling the motor speed.

Arduino BLDC Motor Control - Circuit Diagram - Schematic

You can get the components needed for this Arduino Tutorial from the links below:

*Please note: These are affiliate links. I may make a commission if you buy the components through these links. I would appreciate your support in this way!

Arduino Code for BLDC Motor Control

The Arduino code is really simple with just few lines of code.

/*
        Arduino Brushless Motor Control
     by Dejan, https://howtomechatronics.com
*/

#include <Servo.h>

Servo ESC; // create servo object to control the ESC

int potValue; // value from the analog pin

void setup() {
  // Attach the ESC on pin 9
  ESC.attach(9,1000,2000); // (pin, min pulse width, max pulse width in milliseconds)
}

void loop() {
  potValue = analogRead(A0); // reads the value of the potentiometer (value between 0 and 1023)
  potValue = map(potValue, 0, 1023, 0, 180);   // scale it to use it with the servo library (value between 0 and 180)
  ESC.write(potValue); // Send the signal to the ESC
}

Description: So, we need to define the Servo library, because with the servo library we can easily generate the 50Hz PWM signal, otherwise the PWM signals that the Arduino generates are at different frequencies. Then we need to create a servo object for the ESC control and define a variable for storing the analog input from the potentiometer. In the setup section, using the attach() function, we define to which Arduino pin is the control signal of the ESC connected and also define the minimum and maximum pulses width of the PWM signal in microseconds.

In the loop section, first we read the potentiometer, map its value from 0 to 1023 into value from 0 to 180. Then using the write() function we send the signal to the ESC, or generate the 50Hz PWM signal. The values from 0 to 180 correspond to the values from 1000 to 2000 microseconds defined in the setup section.

So, if we upload this code to our Arduino, and then power up everything using the battery, then we can control the speed of the brushless motor of zero to maximum using the potentiometer.

Controlling brushless motor using Arduino and ESC

However, there are few things that we should note here. When initially powering the motor, the signal value must be the same or lower than the minimum value of 1 millisecond. This is called arming of the ESC, and the motor makes a confirmation beeps so that we know that it’s properly armed. In case we have higher value when powering, which means we have a throttle up, the ESC won’t start the motor until we throttle down to the correct minimum value. This is very convenient in terms of safety, because the motor won’t start in case we have a throttle up when powering.

ESC Calibration

Lastly, let’s explain how ESC calibration works. Every ESC has its own high and low points, and they might slightly vary. For example, the low point might be 1.2 milliseconds and the high point might be 1.9 milliseconds. In such a case, our throttle won’t do anything in the first 20% until it reaches that low point value of 1.2 milliseconds.

ESC Calibration - Pulse Width - High and Low Point adjustment

To solve this issue, we can calibrate the ESC or set the high and low points as we want. For that purpose, before powering the ESC, first we need to throttle up our potentiometer to maximum or a value at least greater then the current middle point. Then we can power up the ESC, and we will hear few beeps from the motor which actually confirms that we have set the new high point.

Calibrating ESC using Arduino

Then after 2 seconds, we should move our potentiometer to the position where we what the new low point to be. We will again hear the confirmation beeps and with that we are done with the ESC calibration. Now our throttle will respond right away and we can control the motor within these new two points.

That’s pretty much everything for this tutorial. In case you want to learn how to wirelessly make this Arduino brushless motor control, you can check my previous video where I build and Arduino based RC transmitter and explained how to control BLDC motors using it.

Brushless motor wireless control using Arduino
