Watch-Dog for Telephones by NE555

Most of the telephone security devices available in market are simple but quite expensive. These devices provide blinking or beeping type line-tap/misuse indications. Quite often they do not offer guaranteed protection against unauthor-ised operation. A very simple and uni- que circuit of a telephone watch-dog to safeguard subscriber telephone lines against any fraud is described here. This little circuit keeps continuous watch over the telephone lines and sounds an alarm in case of any misuse. In addition it transmits a loud tone through the telephone lines to prevent further misuse

Annoying high pitch noise generator by 555

Annoying high pitch noise generator by 555
This is a simple high pitch noise generator circuit. It has a timer oscillator with a frequency variable from 15khz – 30khz.
The circuit can be mounted in a plastic box like I have done. The good thing about high frequency sounds is that it is very hard to find where they are coming from. Also, the noise is very annoying and irritating. The crystal speaker is the creamy coloured thing at the bottom of the photo on the left

Alternate 555 Oscillator

Alternate 555 Oscillator
This is a slightly simpler circuit than the one above. The circuit uses just one resistor and one capacitor with the 555 timer IC to create a stable and reliable oscillator with an output that it a true squarewave.
The formula for calculating the frequency is:
f=1/(1.4*R*C).
The values in the formula are expressed in ohms, farads, seconds and hertz. This formula is much simpler than that of the previous circuit. With the values shown on the circuit, the frequency is calculated as 1050Hz, but like the previous circuit, this arrangement can operate at frequencies up to around 500kHz

Basic 555 Timer Oscillator

The circuit on the left shows the standard astable oscillator circuit for the NE555N IC. This si the basic circuit that is shown in most component catalogues and other sources of 555 IC information. With the components shown on the diagram, the output frequency will be approximately 1kHz and the duty cycle 50-50.

4017 Led Pattern-Flasher

4017 Led Pattern-Flasher
The circuit uses a 555 timer oscillator to supply clock pulses of a variable frequency to the 4017 decade counter. The decade counter only needs to have three outputs so the fourth output goes into the reset pin to start the cycle all over again. The central red led is always on. Each row of four leds flash in sequence giving the impression that the light is rotating. It is an idea that works very well giving an eye-catching display. It will run continuously for three hours with a standard pp3 battery

PBS Switch Debouncing by 555

PBS Switch Debouncing by 555
This circuit will remove the transient spikes and contact bounces from a non-latching push button switch.
Using a 555 timer as a monostable circuit, it is easy to build a good switch debouncer circuit. There are many circuits for SPDT debouncing, but not many for a normally open, push-to-make press button switch (PBS). The 555 monostable gives an output pulse of around 20 msec with component values shown. The formula for determining the output pulse is:
tout = 1.1 R1 C1

3-6V Xenon Strobe Light by IC 555 and IRF9Z20

3-6V Xenon Strobe Light by IC 555 and IRF9Z20
This circuit used to come as a kit from a surplus supplier, but probably isn’t available anymore. It shows a few novel concepts such as using a 555 as a pulse width modulator (PWM), and series/parallel camera flash transformers.
The 555 is set up as a pulse width modulator (the off (low) time being set by the trimmer). The output at pin 3 is connected to the gate of the P-channel MOSFET (IRF9Z20) through the 100R resistor to prevent parasitic oscillation of the transistor. A low signal at pin 3 causes the MOSFET to turn on, thus the potentiometer controls the output power, and somewhat the flash frequency, by varying the duty cycle of the 555 and in turn the MOSFET

Frequency Divider by 555 and 4040

Frequency Divider by 555 and 4040
U1 7555 is a CMOS version of 555 LM555 pdf datasheet.
The 555 here is in Astable Oscillator mode, C1 and C4 are decoupling capacitors 0.1uF value, ceramic disc.
The output is around 100kHz, If C3 is plastic or mica the frequency output will be stable with temperature. It is better to use a crystal oscillator.
The 555 output is fed to clock input of 4040, the output of 555 will be a square wave, on every high to low transition (falling edge or negative transition) the counter increments by one and the output is 12 bit binary.
If input frequency is F the final output at Q12 is F/4096. The period T = 1/F.
If you make the 555 run at 1Hz, C3 around 7uF, Then this circuit becomes a long duration timer, the Q12 period will be 4096 seconds or 68 minutes

A flyback converter high voltage supply by 555

A flyback converter high voltage supply by 555
The circuit diagram of the flyback converter will hold no surprises (Fig.16). Literally the only difference with the boost converter is that the inductor is replaced by a transformer, and that the transistor has been replaced for a BUZ21. The BUZ21 has a much lower on resistance (Ron=0.085 ohm) as compared to the BUZ41A (Ron=1.5 ohm) but also a lower drain-source breakdown voltage (100V versus 500V)

12VDC Negative Voltage DC Converter by 555

The circuit is very simple, and is easily made on Veroboard or similar. Construction is not critical, and the schematic is shown in Figure 1 below.
Rectifier diodes should be ultrafast (UF4004 or similar), or you can use 1N4148 signal diodes. Losses will be slightly higher if you use signal diodes, or lower if you wanted to go to the trouble of using Schottky diodes – the latter are not warranted in such a simple circuit (IMO). The zener diode is to protect the circuit against transient overvoltage, and is optional
Using only a standard NE555 timer and a few other parts, this circuit should be up an running in about an hour. The 555 is configured as a minimum parts count astable (i.e. no stable states) multivibrator, and runs at around 17kHz with the values shown. The zener diode (D3) should be a 16V/ 1W type. Resistors are 1/2W carbon film, and small caps may be polyester or mylar

100 Seconds Duration On Switch with Touch Control by 555

100 Seconds Duration On Switch with Touch Control by 555
This is a touch control switch which keeps the circuit on about 100 seconds after touching the plate connected to the 2 numbered pin. At the end of this time duration, relay releases and the circuit gets to off position.
The impedance of the trigger input of the 555 timer IC is very high and the inductive voltage on the human body is enough to trigger it. The circuit works based on this principle. You can use a piece of metal as a plate. The circuit can be used in toy circuits, buzzers or any project that is suitable. You can adjust the duration time by changing the R1 and C1 values

12V to 18V step-up DC converter by IC 555

12V to 18V step-up DC converter by IC 555
This is a power source that creates a DC voltage higher than the voltage feeding the it. It might be used to power your laptop (+18V) from a car battery (12V ~ 13.8V). It is built using very ordinary parts that should be readily available. Here are some specs:
Input voltage 9V ~ 15V
Output voltage 12V ~ 25V
Output current Max. 3A @18V
Switching frequency 20kHz – 40kHz
Efficiency 65% – 95%
If you know these circuits, please skip the following. The circuit is a step-up converter, and it’s workings can be explained by the main property of a coil: its inductance. Imagine a current flowing through a coil. The inductance will cause the current to continue running, even if the power supply that caused this current is taken away. The voltage across the coil will take any value required to keep the current running. This is why you can easily create sparks with a coil, a spark is simply a current flowing at a very high voltage.
This circuit flips between two states: ‘charging’ the coil with current, and dumping this current into the output capacitor. The frequency at which this happens is so high that only a small ripple remains at the output capacitor (10000uF). Here is the circuit

Drive SCR thyristor by IC 555

Drive SCR thyristor by IC 555
This circuit gives a burst of pulses to fire 2 SCRs, when pin 4 is taken to 12V the SCR is turned on, to use this circuit you need 12V short pulses phase shifted with respect to AC sine wave on bridge.
This way you can control the bridge from near 0% to near 100% ON, that way battery banks can be charged, electroplating can be done, current and voltage can be controlled with opamps, thyristors are very rugged compared to transistors and MOSFETS in that order

555 timer pulse generator

To drive ignition coils is to use a 555 timer pulse generator. A 555 generates a square wave output that triggers the 2N3055. Adjusting the two potentiometers and the value of the capacitor will change the frequency of the output.

Flyback Transformer Based high voltage generators

Flyback Transformer Based high voltage generators
Uses a 555 timer IC to generate a 720Hz triangle waveform (at pin 2 of the IC). This waveform is of about 50% duty cycle. This triangle waveform is compared to a fixed voltage with a comparator, IC2. The fixed voltage can be varied by potentiometer VR1. The output of the comparator is a 720Hz square wave of variable duty cycle. The potentiometer must be adjusted so that Q2 is near to 0% duty cycle (ie it spends the majority of the time off)

12V input, 12V battery charger by 555,7815

12V input, 12V battery charger by 555,7815
The charger consists of two stages: The first is a capacitive voltage doubler, which uses a 555 timer IC driving a pair of transistors
connected as emitter followers, which in turn drive the voltage doubler proper. The doubler has power resistors built in, which limit the charging current.

The second stage is a voltage regulator, using a 7815 regulator IC. Its output is applied to the battery via a diode, which prevents reverse current and also lowers the voltage a bit. The resulting charge voltage is about 14.4V, which is fine for charging a gelled or AGM battery to full charge, but is too high as a trickle charger, so don’t leave this charger permanently connected to a battery. If you would like to do just that, then add a second diode in series with D3!
There is a LED connected as a charge indicator. It will light when the charge current is higher than about 150mA. The maximum charge current will be roughly 400mA

SOLID STATE TESLA COIL WITH 555 TIMER

SOLID STATE TESLA COIL WITH 555 TIMER
Setting the operating frequency with an integrated timer is easy and practical. Following schematic is nothing more than the standard astable mode circuit design with a classic 555. It requires only two resistors and a capacitor to set frequency (with duty cycle of course) and another resistor to determine power transistor’s base current, which you can find it’s optimal value experimentally. I used 1K for R1, 2.2K for R2, and 10nF for C which made circuit to run nearly at 27 kHz theoretically, at %60 high to %40 low duty cycle. You can quickly calculate operating parameters from the resistance and capacitor values with a small program that I’ve written

Ignition coil driver by IC 555 + 2N3055

Ignition coil driver by IC 555 + 2N3055
Here is a very simple circuit that will provide high voltage (15-40kV) sparks using a common ignition coil. The input is 12VDC at around 5 to 6 amps. Mine produces sparks that are about 3/4″ to 1″ in length. A 2N3055 NPN power transistor is pulsed with a square wave signal that comes from the 555 timer IC. The frequency of the pulses depends on the resistors between pins 7 and 8 and between pins 7 and 6. The pulse is also dependent on the capacitor. You can experiment with these values. Try inserting a smaller capacitor to raise the frequency. At different frequencies the sparks will change certain characteristics. At a high frequency the sparks will get fatter but shorter in length. At lower frequencies the spark maybe longer but thinner. I assembled my project on a solderless breadboard. You can use whatever you like. The capacitor should be a tantalum or mylar type, but this is not absolutely necessary. A ceramic type should work fine just as long as the temperature is not too high around it

Efficient flyback driver by IC 555 + IRF510

Efficient flyback driver circuit by IC 555 + IRF510
This is a good and fairly efficient flyback driver circuit. All parts can be obtained easily from Radio Shack, including the MOSFET. This circuit uses a 555 timer IC to pulse a 2N2222 with square wave at a frequency that is set by the capacitor and the potentiometers. The 2N2222 then drives the gate of the MOSFET and the MOSFET delivers the pulse to the ten turn winding on the flyback. If you build this circuit you will have to adjust the potentiometers until you get the longest arc possible. The circuit will run from +12VDC to +15VDC at about 3A. The MOSFET must be heatsinked! This is important if you are going to run this for any decent amount of time. If the MOSFET still gets too hot or burns up you can place a 4 ohm (for a +12V supply) or a 5 ohm (for a +15V supply) between the source lead of the MOSFET and the primary on the flyback. Make sure that these resistors havethe proper power rating for the voltage and current that they will be carrying. The flyback should be wound with ten turns of 14-16 guage solid wire. Anchor it in with some electrical tape. Any previous primary windind should have already been removed before winding the new one

Infrared Remote Control System Receiver

Infrared Remote Control System Receiver By IC Digital
Infrared Remote Control System Receiver By IC Digital
This is a single channel (on / off) universal switch that may be used with any Infra Red remote control that uses wavelengths between 850-950nm.
Notes:
Any “button” of any remote control may be used to work this universal switch. The button must be pressed for two seconds (determined by R3 and C2) before the relay will operate. Once operated the circuit will remain in this state (latched) until reset. To reset, any button is pressed and held for the delay.
For example, if you were watching TV, and your set was tuned to Channel 3, you could press and hold the TV remote controls channel 3 button for two seconds. That way the TV viewing would not be affected and the relay would activate. You can connect anything to the relay, for example a lamp, but make sure that the relay contacts can handle the rated voltage and current.
Circuit Operation:
IC1 is an Infra Red module. IR modulated pulses are received and buffered by this IC. It has a standard TTL output, the output with no signal is logic 1. One gate of a CMOS inverter and drives Red LED1 as a visible switching aid. Another gate buffers the signal and applies it to the time constant circuit, comprising R3,C2,R4 and D1. C2 charges via R3, and discharges via R4, D1 prevents quick discharge via the low output impedance of the CMOS buffer

Generating -5 Volts From a 9 Volt Battery With IC 555

Generating -5 Volts From a 9 Volt Battery With IC 555
A 555 timer can be used to generate a squarewave to produce a negative voltage relative to the negative battery terminal. When the timer output at pin 3 goes positive, the series 22 uF capacitor charges through the diode (D1) to about 8 volts. When the output switches to ground, the 22 uF cap discharges through the second diode (D2) and charges the 100 uF capacitor to a negative voltage. The negative voltage can rise over several cycles to about -7 volts but is limited by the 5.1 volt zener diode which serves as a regulator. Circuit draws about 6 milliamps from the battery without the zener diode connected and about 18 milliamps connected. Output current available for the load is about 12 milliamps. An additional 5.1 volt zener and 330 ohm resistor could be used to regulate the +9 down to +5 at 12 mA if a symmetrical +/- 5 volt supply is needed. The battery drain would then be around 30 mA

Notes:
The NE555 and the First Pulse
The first positive pulse from a classic 555-based oscillator is always 1.6 times longer than the following pulses. The difference is caused by the fact that only during the first cycle C2 starts charging up from 0 V. This is generally not a problem, but sometimes this first pulse just should be the same length as the rest – at least approximately
